January 25th, 2010. Published under Zouk Events in San Diego. No Comments.

heart-with-handsIn honor of Valentines Day and Heart month during the month of February, I’d like to invite you and a partner to take zouk lambada classes.

Normally $10, if you bring a partner to the class, you each split the price and pay only $5 each for the entire month of February–so please take advantage of the opportunity and bring someone new to come check out my class and help spread the knowledge of this amazing and sensual Brazilian dance!

No experience is needed, just bring comfortable clothes, smooth-soled shoes, and your friend or significant other to Dance Place at Liberty Station in San Diego, studio 103.

I’ll be emphasizing fun combinations that can be used in many other dances :-)

Peace, Love and Zouk!

Zouk Lambada at A Time to Dance

December 13th, 2009. Published under Zouk Events in San Diego. No Comments.

Zouk Lambada is now an official class at A Time to Dance studio in North Park, San Diego, California!  The studio, headed up by Angel and Tulane Rivera, offers dancers in San Diego a unique environment where Latin dancing (such as Salsa, Bachata and Afro Cuban), Belly Dancing, Hip Hop, Ballroom dancing and Latin fitness all coexist to create a place where you can pretty much find any dance you’re interested in.  Although salsa is the predominant dance at A Time to Dance, what makes it unique is its integration of other dances.  Since the studio is constantly ambitiously looking to integrate new dances to compliment it’s curriculum, it only seems appropriate that zouk lambada would find a place to make itself known there, and create a broader audience in San Diego.

Every Saturday at 2pm you can take a drop-in zouk lambada course at A Time to Dance.  For those of you who are unable to make the Saturday classes at A Time to Dance or for those who want extra practice, the zouk lambada classes at Dance Place studio in Liberty Station offers the freedom of a more multi-level classroom, as some of the people who come have a lot more experience dancing zouk lambada and the longer class time (1.5 hours) allows more time to practice while dancing and have fun.

A great supplement to each other, taking both the zouk lambada classes at A Time to Dance as well as zouk lambada classes at Liberty Station will increase your level of dancing and help build the dance community!

Lambada debuts on Dancing with the Stars!

October 13th, 2009. Published under Zouk Lambada in the News. 3 Comments.

San Diego Zouk Lambada is so excited that the Brazilian Lambada now has a US audience. On October 12 Dancing with the Stars had couples perform lambada for the first time on national television and so far the response is overwhelmingly positive. It’s important to point out, however, that this US ballroom-version interpretation of lambada is not the kind one would find on the dance floors in Brazil. Sadly, the basic step is nowhere to be seen and the outdated lambada movements, reminiscent of 1980s Kaoma videos, are mixed with swing and salsa spins to fill the space between flashy lifts. Nevertheless, the energetic performance succeeds in capturing the energy of the audience and epitomizing the reason people still continue to dance lambada today–it’s so much fun!

In San Diego you can take a lambada class on Tuesdays at 7:30pm at Dance Place Liberty Station. Classes are $10 and you can try out your first time for $5! The style of lambada we dance originated in Porto Seguro, Brazil (the birthplace of lambada). In the last two decades lambada has been influenced by zouk music from the french Caribbean and now the moves have evolved to be able to be danced to slower zouk music or the traditional faster Brazilian lambada songs. Here is a video of some amazing professional lambada dancers:

Dennis & MarjonnekeDont miss out on this chance to learn some Zouk moves from this Dennis and Marjonneke from Holland!

ABOUT DENNIS AND MARJONNEKE:
Marjonneke van Oosten started dancing in high-school. She was immediately hooked on Zouk. Last year she assisted Dennis twice in New York. She also assists/teaches Kizomba (a lot of Zouk music is actually Kizomba from Angola), which clearly influences her Zouk dancing style.

Dennis Mook-Kanamori started dancing in junior high-school. Like all Dutch boys, he had to learn ballroom dancing. In college, he picked up Cuban Salsa. He has been dancing Zouk for almost 5 years and taught several Zouk marathon weekends in NY last year. Dennis‘ classes are focused on learning many different figures/combo’s in a short period of time by getting a feel for the music. Marjonneke and Dennis have been dancing together for 2 years and live happily together in Leiden, the Netherlands. They are getting married in May 2010.
